Afton, Leslie & Cindy The Loot StoreFor our local project, the Salt Lake Chapter has chosen to serve the needs of two local Title I schools. The "Loot Store" concept was created over two years ago by Diane Fullerton, a 2003 winner of the Huntsman Award. The concept of the store is to provide schools with an incentive program while providing children from poverty-stricken families the opportunity to "purchase" both necessities and niceties for themselves and their families. The stores are stocked with items such as toys, new games and books. It also has school supplies, food, socks, gloves, shampoo and blankets. The children overwhelmingly buy for their families first, then if they have money left over, they buy for themselves. The "loot" part of the program is designed so that the children are rewarded for good, positive and helpful behavior. They earn paper money for things like turning in homework, sitting quietly, and attendance as well as more involved things like helping another student or the janitor. The ways to earn money are limited only by the imagination of the school staff. Once a month the children take the "money" they have earned and spend it in the store. This program not only provides incentive for learning and good behavior, it helps students learn life skills such as saving, budgeting, prioritizing needs and wants, and math skills. Both schools have welcomed us with great enthusiasm, both for the help and the idea. The store at Roosevelt Elementary is run by parents. Our chapter makes sure the store is stocked with items on an as needed basis. At the Lincoln school, the chapter is responsible for stocking and staffing the store. Volunteer help is needed for donations, sorting donations, keeping inventory and staffing. If you would like to help with this project, please contact Bekke Robb at incentivestores@yahoo.com. Donations for the loot stores can be dropped off at 656 E Roosevelt Ave (1460 S). There are drop boxes located on the front porch. Please attach a donation slip with a summary and approximate value of the items donated. You will receive a receipt for your donation. All donations are tax deductible.
